Description
It is my goal to accurately represent the item you are bidding on. The photos should include every surface and a variety of angles. Specific notable flaws will be shown in specific photos. I try to accurately describe flaws so there are no surprises when you open the box at home. Please look carefully at the photos and contact me with questions BEFORE bidding. You are bidding on an Antique Wood R.M. Bair's Patent Cleaning Rod (and a 2nd Bonus Rod). This is a bit of history little known to most. Robert Bair wrote and distributed the very popular 'Manual of Police Revolver Instruction' back in the early 1930's. Copies can be found on ebay and the manual is available as a reprint from several sources.
You can also find his postage paid 2 cent postcard order form which was mailed in job lots to Police Departments all over the country. This card solicited orders for the manual, cleaning solvent, patches, and, his patented wood cleaning rod for handguns.
What you will rarely ever find is the rod itself. Tens of thousands were manufactured, possibly 100k, but very few survive to the present day.
The rod is intended for .38 caliber pistols. The tip is 0.315" diameter, 0.33" with a thin patch. The rod is 9.5" long with 6.125" tapered section. It is clearly marked and in near perfect condition.
The bonus rod MIGHT be from the same manufacture. The writing on the handle is too faded to read, but the tip profile is identical to the larger rod and to the patent drawing. In this case the tip is 0.175, so I expect this is for a .22 or even .25 caliber pistol.
